Five Myths to Wedding Dress Shopping

Dear Brides,

Everything you have ever been told, or heard, or read online about wedding dress shopping is a lie.

I'm just kidding. Only about 99.9% of it. KIDDING! Geez. Realistically speaking it's like 80%.

We have all heard them. The pieces of advice from Aunt Sally who got married twenty years ago. The girlfriend who recently got married and is now a wedding planning guru. Not to mention every other friend, family member, coworker, and flower girl who has the best piece of advice for you when it comes to your dream dress journey.

But alas, do not fret, for I have put together, and debunked, the top five myths when shopping for your wedding gown! Let me put you at ease, steer you back in the right direction, and make your experiences at bridal salons more effective, instructive, and above all, fun. Yes, fun! Choosing your dream gown should not be a stressful experience. It should be empowering, enjoyable, and memorable. Lets begin!

1. I CAN BUY THIS CHEAPER ONLINE

Congratulations! You are absolutely right! You found a gorgeous gown at a top notch bridal salon who provided you with the designer and style number, and you are ready to take your business elsewhere. This is probably the biggest myth as a business owner which makes my heart hurt. Not because you feel the need to purchase from someone else, but because I sincerely worry about what you are paying for. Gowns from prominent designers which are advertised online are almost always knockoffs, forgeries, or even a different gown completely. Reputable designers do not allow their gowns to be sold online. Let me repeat, reputable designers do not allow their gowns to be sold online. They can only be sold in approved bridal salons of their choosing. So while you think you're getting that gorgeous designer gown for a ridiculously great deal, it is simply too good to be true. Save the heartache. Support local business, and spend quality money on a quality gown & experience!

2. YOU WILL CRY WHEN YOU FIND "THE ONE"

Bride, when you find the one you will know it. It may come with some big epiphany or not. You may make a huge deal about it or simply come to terms with the fact that you have found what you love. Your experience is your own. Don't let anyone tell you that unless you make a Kim K. ugly cry face you have not found the dress for you. I found "the one" with my mom & sister, put down my deposit, and not once shed a tear. I was incredibly happy, super excited to show it off, but crying just wasn't in the cards for me. AND THAT"S OKAY! And if the floodgates open and tears come down that is okay too. This is your journey so enjoy it your way.

3. WEDDING DRESSES MUST BE WHITE

Wedding dresses do come in white... And ivory, champagne, nude, rose, and almost any other color you can think of! As a traditionalist white will be your staple color, but for those of us bold and daring enough to venture into the unknown our options are endless. More and more designers are introducing color into their collections to give gowns an extra special factor. What better way to make your dress memorable to your guests than giving them something completely unexpected!

4. YOU HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO ORDER

This myth is one of the biggest I struggle with as a stylist. While brides who start their shopping experience two years prior to their wedding date do have plenty of time, brides who start six months prior do not have as much. Our designers at AMH require anywhere from 14-24 weeks turn around time on special orders. That means your gown could take anywhere from 3.5 to 6 months just to come in. Then, you need to allow between 2-3 months for alterations depending on how busy your seamstress is, and if you're getting married in the busy season. Overall, special orders could take up to 9 months from inception to ready to wear which means starting early allows you the opportunity to shop a plethora or designers and styles. It is important to communicate with your stylist when the big day is so they can help guide you in the right direction!

5. BIGGER IS BETTER

Of course you want your entire glam squad with you as you try on gowns and navigate through the options to find the one, but larger parties can tend to be overwhelming and sometimes work against you. Lots of ladies means lots of opinions, and it is very easy to lose control of your appointment and forget the entire reason why you are there in the first place. FOR YOU! We always suggest to limit your gals between 2-4 of your nearest and dearest so you can enjoy your appointment to the max. You can really listen to your style gurus, and really focus on feeling beautiful!

XOXO
